Charles Canning, 1st Earl Canning
Charles Canning, 1st Earl Canning (14 December 1812 – 17 June 1862) was a British statesman and the first Viceroy of India, serving from 1858 to 1862. His tenure began after the transfer of Indian administration from the British East India Company to the British Crown.
Early Life
Canning was the son of George Canning, a former British Prime Minister. He received his education at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford.
Viceroyalty
- Assumed office in 1858 following the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
- Oversaw the implementation of the Government of India Act 1858.
- Introduced policies aimed at reconciliation and reform, including the establishment of the Indian Penal Code.
Legacy
Canning's tenure is remembered for his efforts to stabilize India during a period of unrest. He was posthumously honored as Earl Canning.
