Sultana Kamal

Sultana Kamal (born 1950) is a prominent Bangladeshi human rights activist, lawyer, and social worker. She is known for her advocacy for women's rights, environmental protection, and social justice. She served as the Executive Director of Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), one of the leading human rights organizations in Bangladesh, and has been a key figure in promoting gender equality and rule of law in the country.

Early Life and Education

Sultana Kamal was born in 1950 in Dhaka, Bangladesh (then East Pakistan), into a family of political and social activists. She is the daughter of renowned poet Sufia Kamal, an icon of women’s rights in Bengal. Inspired by her mother's activism, Sultana pursued a career in law and advocacy.

She earned her law degree from the University of Dhaka and later pursued advanced studies in human rights law abroad.

Career and Activism

Sultana Kamal began her career as a lawyer, focusing on defending the rights of marginalized communities. Her legal work and activism intersected when she joined Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) as Executive Director, where she led numerous initiatives to protect women’s rights, fight gender-based violence, and ensure access to justice.
