Hamza Dewan Choudhury (born 1 October 1997) is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Leicester City F.C. and the Bangladesh national football team. Known for his aggressive tackling and composure on the ball, Choudhury began his career with Leicester City and represented England at youth level before switching his international allegiance to Bangladesh in 2024.

Early life

Choudhury was born in Loughborough, Leicestershire, England, to a Grenadian father and a Bangladeshi mother from Bajitpur, Kishoreganj District.[1] He was raised in a Muslim household and attended school in Leicestershire.

Club career

Leicester City

Choudhury joined the Leicester City Academy at a young age and progressed through the youth ranks. He made his senior debut in 2017 and became known for his energetic midfield displays and tackling ability.

Loan to Burton Albion

Between 2016 and 2017, Choudhury had a successful loan spell at Burton Albion F.C., making 26 appearances in the EFL Championship.[2]

International career

England youth teams

Choudhury represented England U21 from 2018 to 2019, earning 7 caps and scoring once. He was part of the squad that participated in the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.[3]

Switch to Bangladesh

In 2024, Choudhury announced his decision to represent the Bangladesh national football team at the senior level, honoring his maternal heritage.[4] He made his debut for Bangladesh in a friendly match against Nepal in January 2024.

Style of play

Choudhury is known for his tough tackling, positional awareness, and energy in midfield. He often plays as a defensive midfielder but is also capable of playing box-to-box.

Personal life

Choudhury is a practicing Muslim and has spoken publicly about his faith.[5] He married his long-time partner, interior designer Olivia Fountain, in May 2022.[6] They have three children: Aniyah (born 2018), Easah (born 2020), and a third born in 2023.

In 2020, following increased concerns over home security, Choudhury and his wife added two trained guard dogs to their household.[7]
