The United Nations (UN) is an international organization founded on 24 October 1945 to promote peace, security, and cooperation among nations.[1] It is headquartered in New York City, United States, and has 193 member states.[2]
History
The United Nations was established after the Second World War to prevent future conflicts and promote international collaboration.[3] It replaced the League of Nations, which failed to prevent World War II.[4]
Structure
The United Nations has six main organs:
- The General Assembly, where all member states are represented.[5]
- The Security Council, responsible for maintaining international peace and security.[6]
- The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which promotes sustainable development.[7]
- The International Court of Justice (ICJ), which settles disputes between states.[8]
- The Secretariat, led by the Secretary-General, which provides administrative support.[9]
- The Trusteeship Council (inactive since 1994).[10]
Objectives
The primary objectives of the United Nations include:
- Maintaining international peace and security[11]
- Promoting human rights[12]
- Encouraging economic and social development[13]
- Providing humanitarian aid[14]
- Supporting international law[15]
Achievements
The United Nations has played a critical role in various global initiatives, including:
- Establishing peacekeeping operations in conflict zones.[16]
- Adopting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.[17]
- Promoting sustainable development through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).[18]
Criticism
The UN has faced criticism for inefficiency, bureaucracy, and the unequal influence of its permanent Security Council members.[19]
